This lovely young woman has asked me to mentor her for a season.
She's part of a study group at her church that encourages these young adults to find someone to be accountable to as they work through their journal.
I feel so privileged to be allowed to spend time with her talking and praying about whatever is most pressing at the moment and just about some of the bigger issues surrounding our walk with Christ.
Since she's grown up in a Christian home and has recently returned home from a missions discipleship program and outreach, she is pretty grounded and knowledgeable about the basics.
And a whole lot more.
She is so mature and kind and thoughtful, and she's eager to put her faith into action. This challenges me in some really good ways and we decided together to take things a step further. We prayerfully discussed spending some time doing our own little "outreach" here in our backyard. It's not really a required part of her "program" but it's part of what we signed up for when we gave our lives to the Lord and I wonder why I actually do so little of it.
The donuts and coffees were purchased and we headed out into the park and chatted with three very willing and open men that we encountered along the way. It was the easiest and most natural thing to speak of God's love for them and to pray a blessing on them if they desired.
They also enjoyed the donuts.
The one fellow was very touched by our encounter and he said it made him want to go back to church again so my friend invited him to her church which serves breakfast downtown in between services and is a very open and welcoming place. The Lord also asked me to give him a bit of money and he was profoundly thankful as he was really needing groceries.
I think we may be onto something here.
Smile.
